Trots att mitt swahiliska ordförråd är ytterst begränsat så har jag ändå lyckats få ett nytt favorit ord här nere: pole.

Pole betyder ungefär ”jag beklagar” eller ”jag tycker synd om dig” men används i betydligt större utsträckning här nere än vad motsvarande fraser gör hemma. Är du trött? Pole. Har du lite pengar? Pole. Är du hopplöst kär? Pole. Pole är ett perfekt ord för att visa empati och förståelse på och efter att ha upptäckt det här ordet så önskade jag verkligen att vi hade ett speciellt ord för det i svenskan också. ”Jag beklagar” är ju inte något som man säger så himla ofta mer än vid dödsfall eller sjukdoms besked.

På sjukhuset använde jag frasen väldigt flitigt. Var det en kvinna som hade det extra jobbigt eller tufft så var ofta pole det enda jag kunde säga eller göra för försöka göra det lite bättre för henne. ”Pole dada” kunde jag säga till dom. Dada betyder syster. Nästan alltid blev svaret ”asante nurse” eller ”asante dada”. Och de menade det. De uppskattade verkligen att man brydde sig om dem.
